The lesson explains common energy-efficiency strategies that minimize cooling costs by reducing heat gains. Air conditioning is expensive and should be our last resort for cooling a building. This Energy Calculations lesson covers the most important notations, conversions, and equations you need to know as a building energy inspector or design consultant. This lesson also contains calculation exercises that give you practice at solving simple energy problems. Energy calculations help you and your customers decide on energy-efficiency improvements that make sense for your project. This lesson covers the following topics: energy-unit conversions, heat-transmission rates, air-change rates and energy-improvement payback periods. This is a 2.0 hour session.

This Heat Loss and Gain lesson will show three modes of heat transmission and how heat transmission occurs in building assemblies. We divide heat transmission into two major compliments: heat loss and heat gain. Heat loss and heat gain determines how much energy a building uses for space conditioning. This lesson also covers how to minimize heat transmission in buildings. This lesson covers the following topics: primary drivers of heat transmission in buildings, methods to evaluate heat loss and heat gain in buildings and the best strategies to improve buildings with excessive heat-transmission. This is a 2.0 hour session.

This Heating and Cooling Introduction lesson covers how the thermal envelope, HVAC systems and occupant behaviors affect the heating and cooling needs of buildings. One essential purpose of a building is to provide comfort. Buildings that don’t provide adequate comfort cause occupant dissatisfaction and reduced occupant productivity. This lesson covers the following topics: seasonal space-conditioning loads, how the building envelope affects heating-and-cooling loads and cost-effective HVAC-efficiency strategies. This is a 0.7 hour session.

**Lesson: Temperature and Heat**

This Temperature and Heat lesson covers how temperature and heat flow affect building energy-performance and comfort. Temperature and heat are some of the most important and misunderstood principles of building science. This lesson covers the following topics: the relationship between temperature and heat, the three primary modes of heat flow and the difference between sensible and latent heat. This is a 1.9 hour session.
